Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting seborrheic areas of the skin—regions rich in sebaceous glands, such as the scalp, eyebrows, face and chest (sternal area).

It is particularly common in the first three months of life and in younger adults.

It presents as well-defined pink to red patches with dryness, flaking (dandruff) and itching. Lesions may merge, covering the entire scalp and extending to the forehead and neck.The condition has a chronic course with periods of remission and exacerbation.

Diagnosis is based primarily on clinical presentation. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be performed for confirmation.

Due to its chronic nature, regular follow-ups with a dermatologist are important.Treatment includes:

• proper skincare with moisturizing baths, creams, and lotions

• antifungal preparations (gels, creams, lotions, foams, shampoos)

• corticosteroid creams, lotions, or shampoos to reduce inflammation

Use of antifungal and corticosteroid treatments should be limited and not prolonged.

Risk factors include physical and emotional stress, hormonal changes, poor diet, alcohol consumption, fatigue, extreme weather conditions, excessive use of shampoos, poor skin hygiene, and obesity.Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, head injuries, and stroke are also associated with an increased risk of seborrheic dermatitis.
