Herpes simplex is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. It can cause various changes on the skin, mucous membranes, and the central nervous system.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 primarily affects the oral region and is transmitted through direct contact, saliva, or secretions. Type 2 is most commonly transmitted sexually or from mother to child during childbirth.

It is considered one of the most common viral infections in humans. By school age, more than 95% of children have been exposed to the virus.

It manifests as small fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) on the skin or mucous membranes. These are often accompanied by itching and sometimes a burning sensation. The most common locations are the lips, corners of the mouth, and the area around the nostrils.

Diagnosis is straightforward and is usually based on clinical symptoms.

Humans are the only natural reservoir of the virus. It is recommended to use clean glasses, cups, utensils, etc. to prevent transmission. Sharing personal cosmetics such as lipsticks or eye makeup should also be avoided.
